BOOK REVIEWS

The Wanderer by Sharon Creech

Star Rating: 5/5

Genre: Teen Adventure

Notes: Has death, loss, mild violence, some domestic abuse, abandonment, gender stereotypes, and religious references

Orphan Sophie is preparing for a voyage with her 3 uncles Mo, Dock, and Stew, and her cousins Cody and Brian. The destination? Visit Boppie their grandfather, in England and to secretly hunt down uncle Dock's long lost love Rosalie. Along the way, they learn new things including hearing stories of Boppie and of Sophie's mysterious past. They have many adventures along the way starting with clamming and ocean storms, and ending with a love unrequited. The Wanderer represents a love for the sea, a change of heart, and a family forged by tragedy that is now able to see that people and the ocean are the same. Constantly changing, dangerous, and beautiful.

Why I gave it 5 stars: This book has many things to love. Humor, romance, loss, and is just something you don't want to put down. Done in 2 voices, Cody and Sophie, this book will be a inspiration to anyone going through change and challenges. Giddy-up and get some apple pie because that is all you will want after reading this book!
